Position Overview The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota, invites nominations and applications for a Lecturer in PK-12 Arts Teacher Education. The Arts in Education program includes MEd Initial Licensure and MEd Professional Studies programs, an MA degree program, and a PhD track. Tenure-Track Faculty, Lecturers, Teaching Specialists, Community Faculty, and Graduate Students teach and/or advise students in the areas of dance, theatre, and visual and media arts. The successful candidate in this position will co-lead a vibrant team committed to imagining equity-minded PK-12 arts education (undergraduate- and graduate-level coursework and MEd Initial Licensure and Professional Studies programs). This means that the successful candidate will possess an explicit commitment to equity, access, and diversity matters related to markers of difference including, but not limited to race, social class, gender and gender identity, language, and sexuality. The faculty and graduate students in the Arts in Education program are interested in researching and teaching political and social ideas, issues, and concerns in the curriculum, contexts, and pedagogies of arts and design education. As scholars and teachers, we explore these ideas, issues, and concerns in and across teacher education, curriculum studies, and arts content areas. The Arts in Education program provides critical and forward-thinking preparation for those interested in exploring education broadly conceived, those interested in becoming PK-12 Dance, Theatre, and/or Visual Arts teachers, and those interested in assuming positions as scholars, researchers, or educational policy-makers-with a strong philosophical, theoretical, research-based, and practical understanding of the dynamic interplay among equity, diversity, access, pedagogy, and curriculum.
This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure-track position in a highly regarded college of a major urban research university. Located in the culturally diverse cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the University of Minnesota offers unique opportunities for research and participation in varied cultural communities. Additional information about the college and department can be found at The individual hired will be appointed to a full-time, 9-month, annually-renewable position as a Lecturer in Arts in Education during academic year 2024-2025. This position will begin with the 2024-2025 academic year, with a start date of August 26, 2024. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be appointed for a 1-year term. Continuation of this appointment beyond May 25, 2025, is contingent on satisfactory performance and continuing availability of resources.

Job Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Teaching/Supervision (60%)

  • Teach 18 credits per academic year.
    • Courses may include, but are not limited to, CI 1032: Learning In and Through the Arts, CI 3001: Engaged Arts Learning, CI 5078: Application of Aesthetic Theory, CI 5065: Improving Arts Programs in Schools, CI 5096: Arts Education Experience, and CI 5097 Arts Education Student Teaching Seminar
    • Supervise school-based/clinical placements for Arts in Education teacher candidates.
      Program Co-coordination/Advising /Student Development/ (30%)
      • Serve as the co-coordinator for arts teacher education programs with particular emphasis on practicum placements and supervision.
      • Serve as academic adviser for arts teacher candidates.
      • Assist with program area needs (e.g., scheduling, course revision/development, recruiting adjunct instructors/supervisors).
      • Collaborate with the Office of Teacher Education regarding assessment and accountability, school partnerships, licensing, and clinical placements for MEd Initial Licensure programs.
      • Collaborate with departmental-level enrollment manager(s) and student academic adviser(s) on overarching issues related to prerequisites, admissions, student funding options, and overall student satisfaction.
      • In collaboration with Marketing & Communications Manager, develop social media communication tools to reach multiple stakeholders (e.g., future students, alumni, current graduate students, employers).
      • Serve on doctoral committees as an affiliate member of the graduate faculty in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction (Note: Pending a PhD, and subject to approval by the Department's graduate faculty members after hire).Service and Outreach (10%)
        • Lead Arts in Education marketing efforts for new programs (e.g., online licensure options, professional development courses, and additional
          license programs.
        • Participate in department, college, university, and community service or other outreach activities, such as service on internal committees or task forces and/or collaborating with external constituencies, as well as in the activities of relevant state and national professional organizations.
        • Participate in planning and facilitation of teacher candidate recruiting, orientations, and retention initiatives, and college-level events.

          Qualifications





          Required Qualifications
          • A master's degree is required to be hired as a teaching specialist. A PhD is required to be hired as a Lecturer.
          • Current K-12 license in dance, theatre arts, or visual arts
          • At least 3 years as an arts teacher of record in K-12 classrooms.
          • Evidence of an explicit commitment to equity, access, and diversity matters related to markers of difference including, but not limited to race, social class, gender and gender identity, language, and sexuality.
          • Excellent oral and written communication skills.Preferred Qualifications
            • Degree in Education, Dance, Theatre Arts, or Visual Art.
            • Higher education teaching experience.
            • Previous experience advising graduate students.
            • Teacher leadership experience (e.g., instructional coach, grade-level lead, equity-team member) in an arts context.
            • Evidence of leadership in promoting innovative use of arts integration and inter-arts learning in formal and/or informal performing arts contexts.
            • Evidence of the capacity to be a flexible, situational, and visionary leader who effectively leads and collaborates with others.
            • Evidence of organizational ability, including the ability to coordinate multiple tasks.
